In a new six-part series for BBC Three, Tough Young Teachers follows six trainee teachers on one of Britain’s toughest graduate programmes, Teach First. This is the first time the sometimes gruelling, often life changing journey of a new teacher has been filmed.
The series has unprecedented access to Teach First, a charity that hand-picks the brightest young graduates and places them into schools in deprived areas where they will learn on the job for two years to earn a teacher qualification. From day one they are expected to hit the ground running; they can teach up to 400 students a week and just like their more experienced colleagues, they are expected to improve results.
Filmed over the course of a year in three London schools, Tough Young Teachers follows the personal stories of six driven trainees tackling tough issues in education head-on. Working with school communities in London, this is a unique insight into the critical role new and established teachers’ play in ensuring children from low income communities get a fair education.
